“Doctor Strange”

Please note: this review may contain some spoilers.

One word to describe Marvel’s newest movie release, Doctor Strange, would be excellent. It has all the action and humor a Marvel movie has, and the VFX are great and rival movies like Inception. Buildings bend, magic is used to create weapons and open portals to other places as well as dimensions like the dark dimension.

Doctor Strange is the story about Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), a successful, talented, and arrogant neurosurgeon. His hands are permanently damaged after he is involved in a car accident. Then, no longer being able to perform surgery, he looks for options to heal his hands. He hears about a man who was badly injured and then miraculously healed and it leads him to a world of alternate dimensions. He learns to use metaphysical abilities under the guidance of the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). Finally, Strange takes responsibility for the protection of Earth from the mystical threats from other dimensions like the dark dimension.

A marvelous cast…

Benedict Cumberbatch was excellent as Doctor Strange. The character is complex and Benedict shows both the good and bad sides of Strange, and we see the moment where he realizes he is the one that needs to change in order for everything else around him to work, including the magic. Tilda Swinton is good as the Ancient One. She is mysterious and hiding her own secrets about herself that become known in the end. Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) changes his views about the world he thinks he knows by the end of the movie. Wong (Benedict Wong) starts as a serious character who does not even smile, and by the end becomes a character that is laughing at jokes.

Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) is okay but she is not on screen much after the beginning of the movie. Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) is a fallen student of the Ancient One and the villian. He steals some pages from one of the spell books that will allow him to bring the leader of the dark dimension to earth and merge the worlds. In the end, Kaecilius and the dark dimension are defeated and Strange takes over the New York sanctuary.

After the credits…

In typical Marvel fashion there is a teaser after the credits finish rolling. This time it is Doctor Strange and Thor discussing Loki.

Doctor Strange is already off to a great box office start, so it’s no wonder that some people are predicting that it could be one of the most successful movies of the year. Go see this movie! You’re not likely to regret it.
